| Shan's Foodies -- Fit, Fun & Fabulous! |
| My sister and I were raised around food, in the kitchen, family reunions revolving around food prep, beach picnics, water ski day camp foodies, family bbqs, food, food, food.... My mom has been juicing fruit, making lasagna, bread, tacos, you name it, she made it, from day one! My sister & I were always in the kitchen helping her & I don't mean washing dishes, I mean making Great Food! I think we invented the BBQ tri-tip craze.... I swear my dad was bbq'ing tri tips & stuffing them with garlic in the late 70's/early 80's. We even had it at our wedding! It is a family tradition, which is what makes food and food prep so exciting! Create your own history - what better way to do it than through food?!? My dad was diving off the Channel Island in the early 70's for Lobster! I remember them crawling around our kitchen floor before they met my mom! He also brought up Scallops which we ate right there on the back of the boat RAW with lemon! And Abalone....you don't see this anymore really at all & we would pound & pound & pound it with the meat mallet until it was just right. My mom would lead us in breading the abalone steaks then we would gently sauté them in oil, actually it was probably butter. My mom is pretty much the butter Queen, I've tried to maintain her traditions, using Extra Virgin Olive Oil. My mom is also the "Picnic Queen", we would have these gourmet picnics at the beach (we lived on the beach in Ventura growing up), or if we would go to outdoor concerts, she would always pack Lox & Bagels, BBQ chicken, etc. Our food was never boring or the same. Our school lunches were quite different, to say the least. I look back now and am so proud of my parents for not buying into all the packaged stuff and actually making our meals. They know it! And where do you think I get it!??! I could go on and on about adventures in food with my mom & then go on to tell you about adventures with my Aunt who is now a professional Caterer. She is self taught too & churns out amazing delicacies. For one of my bridal showers in 1990, she did the food and my sister in-laws still rave about her chocolate truffles to this day! My Auntie always involved my sister & I in her culinary adventures &..... let's just say 2 little nieces, 2 big juicy pomegranates in her gorgeous kitchen! We're still sorry for that one! Both my Grandma's were also big inspirations to my food world. My grandma on my mom's side makes THE BEST Chicken & Dumplings! I have the recipe, have tried a few times, but... It's just not the same! I do promise though, to keep trying. I have a few recipes from my dad's mom too, the Grasshopper Bars are INCREDIBLE. She has also been making the Red Velvet Cake since I can remember, we always had it for special gatherings. Original recipe! I'm also on for a Beef Jerky lesson, yes, she makes homemade beef jerky that is like nothing else! Stay tuned.... My approach to food is, "keep it simple". I prepare "gourmet" quality meals without spending a lot of time, money or trouble. The key is to plan & prepare ahead as much as you can. FOOD IS LIFE! Why not plan for it!?! Plan your meals (what you are going to fuel your body with) ahead, plan your shopping trips (shop around, try new markets, ethnic, specialty, organic...), & fabulous food will be a snap & joy to create. Your family will thank you. I'm still thanking my mom.... and dad! |
